When I am in US, I always enjoy watching the life styles of our Indians and compare their thought process with the people living in India.
I felt many times young couples in US are too much paranoid with so many misconceptions about bringing up of the kids.
In India all most in every home the TV is on for 24/7 . I did not come across any discussion about kids and their addiction to TV. The present topic in India is ( to my knowledge, ) the internet and its negative influence on kids. Especially now that the computer education has become part of curriculum in schools .
In US I have come across few young couples who are worried about the addiction of their kids to TV.
When the kids are nearing their first birth day generally they get attracted to sounds and visuals. And in most of the day care centers they do have these Televisions and at the lunch time they make the kids eat their food by making them sit before the TV, so that it is easy to feed them.
Now the young couples are worried to send their kids to day care centers because they get addicted to TV but they have no choice , because most of them are working.
According to me television can be of benefit. It can instruct, inform and entertain.Bit it can also have negative influence on a person . Therefore it is better to keep the kids and their TV time under control and guidance so that it does not control the kids.
I think when we do not permit our kids to watch TV there is every possibility that they start watching the TV when we take them to friends place, on which we do not have any control.
So instead of refusing them the viewing of TV, I feel we should guide them to watch the right programs for limited time which help them in the education and personality development. And when we permit them to have limited time viewing they do not feel that they are deprived of some thing which their friends are enjoying. I may be wrong but that’s what I feel we should do.

I second your thoughts. I am a father and I do think there is no harm if children watch TV programs that is appropriate for their age. There is a program named "Art Attack" that comes in Disney and another similar program named M.A.D that comes in Pogo. And I have seen there are very some nice cartoon programs with nice messages that come in other Kid's TV channels.

A moderate approach and in which we guide the kids to watch the right programs for limited time is certainly the best way

Silence in US is deafening . You are right the silence is painful here and that could be one of the reasons for kids get attracted to sounds from TV.

Yes ML the cold weather makes kids restricted to indoor activities and Parents may become some times helpless in controlling the viewing of TV programs. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

Growing up in the US is a lot different than in India.
For one thing, Indian kids here feel a lot of peer pressure. They want to fit in with the rest of the kids in schools. So they try to emulate the other kids and that includes watching TV programs and discussing them during breaks.
Secondly, the cold weather greatly restricts outdoor activity. TV becomes a kind of asylum, esp during holidays. It is upto parents to help them maintain a healthy balance.
And I'm not too sure about what you say about daycare centers. During summer they have a lot of outdoor activities. Maybe during winter they turn to TV, but I don't think the TV is on all the time...
A very thought provoking post.

Indu, The kind of programs here for kids are not available in India. Like Nickeledon and Thomas train and tubby so on there are programs made with idea of enticing kids/toddlers. it works. and it is true. In India Kids ignore noise as it is everywhere , it is not so in USA, there is a lot of silence in life in US

Indujee,
The first thing that is at receiving end due to the TV is the kids' education. It diverts their attention to the things, which are alluring their minds but less important then the study. Yours is an attention grabbing article.

First, wow! You ve posted 311 blogs! Hats off!
What you say in this article is true-in India parents dont rant much about addictions-There are so many other problems they cant be bothered so much about one problem.
Agree with you 100% about guiding kids about watching the right programs. We should be around too, as much as possible -even if we are busy with housework drop in to the living room once a while just to be in touch...

I have not visited any day care centers. When we meet people @ weekend parties this was the topic for the discussion.
Hey Sue thanks for the information, May be people should visit the day care centers before making the decision of sending their kid or not. I appreciate your visit and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
