My goodness, that was long and serious. But yes, it was good discussion. I hope that gender equality comes to stay in our country. More than that, each sex is different; women are good at certain things that men are not and vice versa. it would be just wonderful if one acknowledges that and behaves equally.

Wow, thats some serious discussion.

Gender equality. That is still a distant dream...imo. Each gender is unique and as discussed...respect for their uniqueness for what they bring with themselves. Assert it.

Empowerment.

Great discussion, good work :)

Indu,

I am not sure if it would be appropriate to intrude. I read about " education and economic freedom" of women will change the scenario. Has it changed any thing really ?  Do we look at some one differently  just because she is educated and  economically independent.

I believe the entire scene depends on mind set of Society, Men and also Women. I believe this celebrations once every year may not really achieve much. I believe both Women and Sr.Citizens are talked about but they pushed all the time.

I am not trying belittle the initiatives and great appreciation but I am asking what does all these "achieve" in terms of the purpose. If we are all so concerned, then ask why we have little written on it on Sulekha. I know there may not be takers for my views. People  like to write stories, poetry and even on cooking, how many wrote about incidents I mentioned and even the ones reported on 8th March - the very day.

I am sorry,if I have offended any one. Pardon the crazy old man, who does not like MBSS.

God bless.

Smti Induji,

I am glat that you understand the problems of your contry, but India is one of the lagest democratic country in the world, after United States.

I also think that The 123 Agreement on Nuclear deal for India is the best possible deal with Washington, it will lift Indian people out of pooverty to maintain the grouth India had in the last few years.

India is the only country in Asia that United States trust, and Wahington would like to grow our strong relation with India.

India's present government is very sincere and honest. I have never ever been to India, but I can say this according to my past experienced  only thing India have to fear is fear itself.!!!!

Warm regards.

V-S-Gopal,

You have said it all. BRIDE BURNING  is an unique feature in Indian woman abuse.
Thanks a lot for such an enlightened comment.

 Hi Indu,

Sorry for this belated visit. As usual, you have done an excellent media job of interviewing persons but this time you have had a four-some to speak to you! I frankly wonder how you technically juggled through that.

I am familiar with Ranjini and Melody, who make a "brains' trust". They have shown splendid perceptions in their replies and analyses. Although I have not interacted much with Matheikal and spk100, I find their observations unexceptionable.

There is basically plentiful convergence in their views. Much has happened in the recent decades in India and yet much needs to be done to place women on the pedestal that is their right. One can possibly write a book or tomes on this subject. On the whole there is better awareness, literacy, education, gainful employment and self-confidence in the females of today than say two decades ago. The subservience to men has definitely come down, and women do assert themselves. New brides nowadays call their husbands by name and say things like "ennadaa", "nee poyittu waa" etc!! This was unthinkable two or three decades ago! We have to bring about a steady social revolution to give women and girls their rightful place and dignity. The Govts., NGOs, Corporates and opinion leaders have been playing their role and they will continue to do so.

Modernism and globalization have however affected some great traditional values which our society was proud of. Women in a large number, yet a minority, indulge or over-indulge in smoking, drinking, sex (pre-marital, extra-marital), and resort to certain vulgarisations in dress and manners, often taking the wrong pages from the West. In olden times, men were wrecking families. Now, women are also wrecking families, and as a result only the children suffer. Separations and divorces in perfect aping of the West are going to increasingly wreck the family-concept of happy living.

When men drown, women are going to ensure that they surely follow them, as perfect equality is a necessity! Men and women are going to be drowned in more marital miseries, and that leaves a bleak prospect for the kids. We are catching up with the West.

I have not referred to the peculiar torture-chamber-practices followed only in our country, most heinous and despicable. The bride-burning (remember my cartoon on fire-proof sarees?), wife-beating, maid-maiming, sexual offences on girls, gang-rape (is there any country where this term is understood?) etc are a whole lot of agenda that can be tackled only by Bobbittry and similar kind of reforms!!! (Sorry for the black humour!)
